The Pull of Pippi
LOCAL GUIDE: Pippi Beach, Yamba
Some places become part of your holiday before you even realise it. Pippi Beach is one of them. It might begin with a morning walk to watch the sky colour, coffee in hand. Or perhaps it's a quick dip before breakfast that somehow turns into an hour. One stretch of coastline. Endless ways to spend the day.
A Daily Ritual
Locals make Pippi Beach a daily ritual, to check the surf, take a swim, or walk the dog.
At low tide, the beach seems to unfold endlessly in both directions. The sand is firm beneath your feet, perfect for long walks that stretch further than intended.
Pippi Beach is generous in a way that feels increasingly rare. There is space to spread out. Space to breathe. Space to find your own quiet corner, even during the busier months.
You can spend the day surfing, swimming and exploring. Or simply being idle, reading a book, or watching the tide move in and out. All feel equally worthwhile.
If you spend enough time here, chances are you'll spot the local pod of bottlenose dolphins in the waves. Dolphin Park, named in their honour, sits at the heart of the beach.
As winter arrives, humpback whales begin their annual journey north to warmer waters. Their tell-tale spouts mark their migration, often drifting surprisingly close to shore.
The season changes. The beach remains, just a different palette and pace. Perhaps that's what keeps people returning.
One of the things we love most about being close to Pippi Beach is that it quickly becomes part of the day. Close enough for a sunrise swim before breakfast. Close enough for a sunset walk after dinner. Close enough to hear the ocean through open windows, the sound that inspired the name Sea Notes.
Swimming at Pippi Beach
Pippi Beach is one of Yamba's most popular swimming and surfing beaches. There are seasonal patrols operating throughout the warmer months. Conditions can vary depending on swell and tides, so we always recommend swimming between the flags when patrols are active.
Many locals begin the day with an early ocean dip, particularly through the warmer months when the water is at its clearest and calmest.
Dolphin Park and the Local Pod
At the centre of Pippi Beach sits Dolphin Park, named for the resident pod of bottlenose dolphins that regularly visit these waters.
Keep an eye on the waves beyond the break and you'll often be rewarded. Some mornings they pass through quickly. Other days they seem content to linger, surfing the waves alongside local surfers.
Flat Rock and the Rock Pools
At low tide, Flat Rock reveals a different side of Pippi Beach.
Rock pools emerge amongst the shelf, creating a small world of shells, sea life and hidden corners to explore. It's a favourite spot for families, curious beachcombers and dogs enjoying the nearby off-leash area.
Whale Watching at Lover's Point
From May to November, humpback whales pass the coastline during their annual migration.
Lover's Point is a favourite place to pause and watch the horizon. On a clear day, their tell-tale spouts often appear offshore before the whales themselves come into view.
Dogs at Pippi Beach
One of the reasons we love Pippi Beach is that it welcomes every member of the family.
The nearby off-leash area from Dolphin Park to Flat Rock is a favourite with locals and visitors alike, offering plenty of space for dogs to run, explore and cool off in the shallows.
Early mornings and late afternoons are when the south end of the beach fills with wagging tails and sandy paws.
