Mornings at Main
LOCATION: MAIN BEACH, YAMBA
Main Beach is quintessential Yamba: iconic ocean baths, the surf lifesaving club, The Kiosk, the Pacific Hotel above, and that feeling of time stretching out a little.
The JOY of arriving slowly
The only way down to Main Beach is on foot, and that is part of its appeal. Follow one of two beach paths down to the bay and feel the pace soften with your footsteps. Below, Main Beach becomes its own little haven: for a reviving swim, breakfast by the water, a towel spread out on the grass, and time to watch the morning unfold.
The ocean pool
Yamba’s ocean pool is built into the rock shelf along the beach. For families, early risers and anyone who likes the feeling of swimming close to the sea without being fully in the surf, it’s a beautiful place to begin the day.
Main Beach is also a well-loved surf spot, where surfers pause at the top of the hill, watch the sets roll in, and paddle out when the conditions are right.
Yamba Surf Life Saving Club
Yamba’s Surf Life Saving Club has watched over Main Beach since 1908, with the beach patrolled by local professional and volunteer members.
It gives this little pocket of coastline so much of its character: red and yellow on the sand, club members catching up on the sunny steps, and the quiet reassurance of people who know the water well.
The Kiosk
Beside the surf club, The Kiosk keeps things easy. Look for the canopy of striped umbrellas. If they’re up, The Kiosk is open. Owned by Shinae & Andrè, who serve coffee, granola and acai bowls, smoothies, bacon and egg rolls, and simple, flavourful beachside fare, tempting beachgoers to linger a little longer.
Look closer
Tiny worlds to explore above the baths. On the rock shelf above the ocean pool, small rock pools appear like little saltwater pockets. They’re easy to miss if you rush, but that’s part of their charm.
Make a morning of it
Arrive early, especially in summer. Swim in the ocean pool, wander the rock shelf if the tide allows, then order coffee or breakfast from The Kiosk. Afterwards, rinse off under the outdoor beach showers, then take the slow way home: up to the lighthouse or down to the village.
